Session 2: Providing Access to Online Streaming Media Across Multiple Campuses & Communities
Wednesday October 23, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm EDT
Providing Access to Online Streaming Media Across Multiple Campuses & Communities with Monique Threatt (Indiana University), Seth Sisler (Ohio University Libraries), and Elena Rossi-Snook (New York Public Library For the Performing Arts)

This presentation will discuss how academic and public libraries ensure access to online streaming across its multi-campus system and communities via discovery tools such as LibGuides, course management systems, online catalogs, web pages, and third-party providers. Panelists serve diverse populations with individual needs in support of community events, information, instruction, and research.  This presentation delves into the strategies employed by these institutions to supply seamless access to online streaming media to both on and off-campus academic patrons and diverse public communities.  The panel will address various topics which may include the complexities of licensing agreements, the accessibility of online streaming databases and organically produced educational films, and the process in which incoming requests for streaming media are managed.  Additionally, the panel will briefly address why libraries may be unable to license content from commercial streaming platforms like Prime, Disney+, and Netflix. By sharing our experiences and solutions, this presentation aims to provide an insight for those institutions grappling with similar challenges in online instruction and research support. It is an opportunity to receive feedback from conference attendees on how their institution manage access to multiple campuses and communities.

Session 3: Budget Strategies, Community-Led Discussion
Wednesday October 23, 2024 2:15pm - 3:00pm EDT
facilitated by Kate Montgomery  (Tulane University) and lisa Hooper (Tulane University)

There has been a tremendous amount of discussion in the literature about individual libraries’ efforts to find fiscally sustainable approaches to meeting an ever-growing demand for streaming film. While each article provides insights and makes a valuable contribution to the field of media librarianship, the print format offers no opportunity for deeper reflection on how the solutions might be best adapted at institutions with vastly different budget needs. This session offers an opportunity to participate in focus group style strategy discussions that will take the print literature into an active, community-led dialogue.

After a brief introduction by session leads Kate Montgomery (Head of Acquisitions & E-Resources, Tulane University Libraries) and lisa Hooper (Head of Media Services, Tulane University Services), participants will be invited to self-select into the appropriate focus group: public libraries or academic library budget ranges (ex. $1,000-$9,000, $10,000-$20,000, etc.). Volunteer moderators will be provided a set of questions to help guide the discussion toward productive outcomes. In the final 15 minutes, the full group will reconvene to share out their key focus-group conclusions.

Session goals:
  • Build community and contacts
  • Develop community-led strategies for film budget management
  • Document issues that warrant further attention and care
